Line6 introduces StageScape visual mixer, lets you touch it up to eleven

It might seem like we've gone mixer mad around here, but with a huge music trade-show starting this week, it's no surprise there's a pile of new tech on offer. The StageScape M20d visual mixer from Line 6 being one such example. Of course, we have inputs (12 line / mic, four line-only, and two for USB/SD streaming) and outputs (four XLR monitors, two master) all strummed along by internal 32-bit floating-point processing. What piqued our interest, however, was that seven inch screen you see up there. Rather than fumble over a mash of faders, you thumb the instrument's icon to pull up its parameters. Other features include Kaossilator style X-Y multi-parameter control, and color coded pots -- presumably so you don't kill the guitar solo by mistake. A final flourish is remote control via an iPad, for mid-track sound tweaks -- though you might need one of these. Tap the PR after the break for more info.

(AP) ? CBS scored big in the weekly ratings with the National Football League's Patriots-Broncos playoff game and the network's reliable series lineup.

New England's lopsided win over Denver in the AFC divisional match on CBS was last week's most-watched broadcast with 34.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Co. figures released Wednesday.

CBS also got a boost from the debut of the sitcom "Rob." The Rob Schneider series rode the coattails of "The Big Bang Theory" to draw 13.5 million viewers despite scathing reviews.

Fox, in a distant second place, had the No. 2 program with the NFC playoff game between the winning New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers. It drew 23.8 million viewers.

The Golden Globes proved the bright spot for fourth-place NBC. The awards show was watched by 16.85 million viewers, beating all network competition in its time slot but dipping slightly from last year's audience of 17 million.

CBS averaged 13.9 million viewers in prime time (8.3 rating, 13 share). Fox had 8.7 million (5.0, 8), ABC had 7 million (4.4, 7), NBC had 6.6 million (4.2, 7), the CW had 1.3 million (0.9, 1) and ION Television had 1.1 million (0.7, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a 3.4 million average (1.7, 3). Telemundo had 1.4 million (0.7, 1), TeleFutura had 620,000 (0.3, 0), Estrella had 220,000 and Azteca 170,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.3 million viewers (6.1, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.3 million (5.5, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7 million viewers (4.7, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Jan. 9-15, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: AFC Divisional Playoff: Denver at New England, CBS, 34.2 million; Fox NFC Playoff: NY Giants at Green Bay, 23.8 million; "NCIS," CBS, 21 million; Golden Globe Awards, NBC, 16.85 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 16.6 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 16.1 million; "Person of Interest," CBS, 14.9 million; "The Mentalist," CBS, 13.6 million; "Rob," CBS, 13.5 million, "Modern Family," ABC, 12.12 million.

Want To Build A Startup? Entrepreneurs & App Developers Are Going B2B

7ef32a75a254f66370f9d74a38bd758eYou may have heard someone say, or said yourself: "I want to build a business, what should I focus on?" Obviously, the possible answers are nearly infinite. Steve Poland wrote a great post in December that addresses this question directly. I would agree with Steve's main piece of advice for founders and entrepreneurs: Focus on problems. Start with a space you know, and ask yourself what's broken -- big or small. Or, here's an alternative approach, which applies to both app developers and founders. Not only should you do market analysis to see what is already working (and not working), but find out which spaces/categories are already saturated. It's not that high frequency alone should be a deterrent, but just because one category is popular, it doesn't necessarily follow that you can't make money (or more importantly, build something disruptive) in another.

Mo Thurman: The Sensitive Subject of Educational Reform

I am a SWISS Trilingual School parent. I am also the director of this small, unfortunately private, full-immersion school in Atlanta, Ga. Currently we are a K-3rd elementary school, and projected to the 12th grade. Most importantly, I am "G's" mom and her awesomeness has nothing to do with me. I believe that a full-immersion language acquisition education is the future of education, not just in America, but around the world, and I believe that this investment will save our world economy.

Our journey began with my sister and her husband, parents to two girls who, from birth, were exposed to Japanese, French, Chinese, Spanish and English. Live-in au pairs and tutors helped to make this possible. When they married they decided to invest all of their money where they thought it would be most useful: in their children. By 2006 they moved to Atlanta and opened a school. With the impending birth of our daughter, we moved to Atlanta in 2008 so that she could receive this gift. On the day of her birth, she was held by my sister's Japanese au-pair. From the day of her birth my sister spoke to her entirely in French. When she was 1 year old, her best friend was a 15-year-old Taiwanese exchange student. At 13 months, she said, "I want cake" in Mandarin; our decision had been validated.

The journey would not be without its struggles, but for us, we have no other option, and hope that this leads to an educational revolution. I feel like I've been given a huge responsibility, one I do not take lightly. When I feel frustrated I reflect upon the children whose lives I hope we have changed. We have a student, Michael, who left us for some time due to financial reasons and was placed in public school. The class was loud and had too many students. Michael spent the remainder of his school year under his desk. The school labeled him ADHD and a doctor prescribed him medication, but for nine months no pharmacist would fill the prescription because he was not yet 6 years old. Two weeks before his 6th birthday, we decided Michael should come back, whether or not they could afford it. After all, we never even took his picture down in his classroom. His grandmother told us the story about his year and agreed that no other school could give him what he needed. Within two weeks of returning, Michael was speaking French and Japanese fluently, as if he had never left. His brain simply remembered that this was what it was supposed to do. He did not go on medication, and does not sit under the table (we do not have desks, a sore point with some of our parents in the past.) However, if Michael wants to, we would let him, and I guarantee he would still learn. I should also point out that when Michael first came to us we were told he had a speech impediment. Shortly after his enrollment his speech therapist determined her services were no longer needed and credited our full-immersion environment as the reason.

We run into more families who "don't get it" than those who do. For some, language acquisition is a novelty or a status symbol. We are not interested in raising elitist or ivy leaguers. We want loving, compassionate global citizens who travel the world educating others: children who are native speakers of three languages and native to three cultures. Love is as important as math here. A love of sushi and how to use chopsticks is valued as much as science. In planning how this school is executed we think about whom we would want the children to become, not what kind of job they will be able to get. We want to create givers and not takers.

I used the word "raising" earlier, because schools should be your children's other parents. As parents we should want teachers to hug our children, and so at SWISS, hugs are incorporated into the training. We want the children to care about each other; bullying is not allowed and when a situation arises every child is talked to about how they would feel if someone teased or hurt them. We are truly a family, and like all families we sometimes disagree, but we always do what we believe is best for our children. We have lost some families along the way, and many reasons for this have been given. We see this as a journey that will be filled with pitfalls and experiments as we do away with a system that simply does not work. Our hope is that the families who are here are in it for the long haul, as we are. One thing we know never suffers is that the children are learning.

There are people who have left us who would dispute these words I type. However, I believe they do not even know that when they withdrew their children from our school they were reacting out of fear. My family has given so selflessly in this journey; my sister and I do not even receive a paycheck. Like many Americans in this broken economy, we struggle to make ends meet, but we keep moving because we believe in this not just for our children but for any child who walks through our doors. I've loved every one of our students as if they were my own and have sometimes been saddened to tears when we lose another child to fear, hurt feelings among adults, or misunderstandings. In the end it is the children who suffer most; it is this part that is hardest to bear.

We have created an online campaign, http://igg.me/p/55754?a=348638 , which we hope will not only tell our story but have people seek us out to help their communities. It is our belief that all schools should be SWISS Trilingual Schools and to settle for less would be a disservice to our children.

(AP) ? Novak Djokovic was having an easy time of it in his first-round match at the Australian Open, so he decided to experiment by coming to the net.

Like pretty much everything he does on the tennis court these days, it was an unqualified success. He easily beat Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 Tuesday to advance to the second round, as did five-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams in the last match of the night at Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic is attempting to join Rod Laver, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in winning three straight Grand Slam singles titles.

"When you're 3- , 4-love up, why not try some other things, something that is not characteristic for your game," said Djokovic, who usually doesn't stray too far from the baseline. "But I am definitely working on my net game, approaching the short balls as much as I can, and take my chances."

He took them well, winning 21 of 26 points he attempted at the net.

Williams started her quest for a sixth Australian title in a match that finished nearly an hour into Wednesday morning. Appearing to have recovered from a left ankle injury that forced her out of the Brisbane International two weeks ago, Williams moved well around the court as she beat Tamira Paszek 6-3, 6-2.

Williams broke Paszek in the fifth game of the second set, then blasted four aces past the Austrian player in the next game for a 4-2 lead. She set up match point with an ace, then used a service winner to clinch it in 79 minutes.

"I'm definitely a night owl, I can stay up all night," Williams said of the late finish.

In an afternoon match on the same court, U.S. Open women's champion and Australian hope Sam Stosur was beaten by Sorana Cirstea 7-6 (2), 6-3. The Romanian later told the crowd that "probably the whole country hates me now."

Stosur's first-round loss mirrors that of Petra Kvitova, who went out in the first round of last year's U.S. Open after winning Wimbledon.

"I'm not sure if it's one of my biggest matches, but it feels like that now," said Cirstea, who had lost both her previous matches against Stosur.

Stosur saved three match points while serving, but finally lost it when her looping forehand drifted over the baseline. No Australian has won the national title since Chris O'Neil in 1978.

"Certainly not the way that I wanted, not just this tournament, but the whole summer," to play out, Stosur said. "There's not any other word for it but a total disappointment."

Second-ranked Kvitova and No. 4 Maria Sharapova advanced. After surrendering her opening service game with a double-fault, Kvitova won 12 consecutive games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Russia's Vera Dushevina.

Sharapova, a former Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, won the first eight games of a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gisela Dulko of Argentina in her first match since returning from a left ankle injury.

The 2008 champion needed just 58 minutes for the win and the only game she lost was on her own serve.

Other women advancing included No. 7 Vera Zvonareva, No. 9 Marion Bartoli and former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic.

No. 14 Sabine Lisicki, No. 17 Dominika Cibulkova, No. 27 Maria Kirilenko, Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak, Shahar Peer of Israel and 2000 Wimbledon semifinalist Jelena Dokic also advanced.

Joining Djokovic in the second round of the men's draw is the player he beat last year in the final here, fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who had a first-set lapse before beating American Ryan Harrison 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Murray, who has lost in Grand Slam finals three times without taking a set, is attempting to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a major.

Andy Roddick easily defeated Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 to also move into the second round. The 15th-seeded American broke Haase to go up 3-0 in the final set with a running passing shot down the line that left his opponent hitting his head with his racket. He broke Haase again to close out the match.

In night matches, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, beaten by Djokovic in the 2008 final at Melbourne Park, defeated Denis Istomin 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Another former finalist, Lleyton Hewitt, gave the night session crowd at Rod Laver Arena something to cheer when the Australian veteran beat Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, coming from 5-1 down in the fourth set.

Earlier, No. 5-seeded David Ferrer advanced in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, over Rui Machado of Portugal. No. 17 Richard Gasquet, No. 23 Milos Raonic of Canada, No. 24 Kei Nishikori of Japan and No. 32 Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia also advanced.

Djokovic started his Australian Open defense wearing a pair of red, white and blue shoes with images of his three major trophies on the sides and a Serbian flag on the heels.

He gave up an early break but immediately broke back at love as he won the next 17 games, saving a break point in the opening game of the second set.

"I think it was a learning process for me in the last couple of years. I just have more confidence that I'm playing on right now," he said. "I just believe that I can win, especially against the biggest rivals in the major events."

HP Phoenix h9: Plenty of Power, Severe Identity Crisis. [PCs]

HP's HPE Phoenix h9 certainly isn't hurting for power. Combining a quad-core processor with up to 16 GB of RAM, discrete graphics and liquid cooling, who this PC is for exactly is a bit unclear. More »

Kodak Reportedly Preparing For Bankruptcy Auction Of Patents

Kodak+Film+Pack_01Poor Kodak. At this point, they're just along for the ride. The last few years have been rough on them, and they've made a few big decisions that haven't panned out. I must admit that while my unsolicited advice to them was sound, it probably would have to have been put in place a decade ago for them to have avoided the current state of things. As it is, the WSJ has word that they are planning to file Chapter 11 and do a court-supervised auction of their many digital imaging patents. It's sad, but the truth is that while Kodak is very much still a valuable company, it's simply not a viable business any more. Their efforts to change the business they're in came too late — and now they're in the business of going under.

Iraqi leader calls for unity, political stability (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraq's prime minister called Sunday for unity and greater political stability to ensure the country's security after the end of the American military presence.

Speaking at a a televised celebration in Baghdad, Nouri al-Maliki warned Iraqis against "excessive joy" over the departure of American troops, saying the country's security situation remains perilous. The last U.S. combat soldiers exited on Dec. 18.

Al-Maliki called on all Iraqis to unite in the interest of the nation and stressed that Iraq needs stability if it hopes to remain secure and rebuild.

"We need political stability so we can address the world in one voice and not in ... conflicting voices," al-Maliki said.

Al-Maliki's comments came during a political crisis that started after his government issued an arrest warrant for Iraq's top Sunni politician, re-igniting fears that sectarian tensions could divide the country and even re-ignite a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites.

Al-Maliki is also trying to get rid of his deputy prime minister, another Sunni, leaving many Sunnis worried that they are being sidelined from power.

On Sunday evening, a Katyusha rocket exploded in Abu Dshir, a Shiite enclave in the mainly Sunni neighborhood of Dora in the southwest of Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding four others, according to police and a hospital officials.

In the capital's southeast, a police car vehicle struck a roadside bomb, wounding seven, including three policemen, police and hospital officials said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information.
