Davish strikes out 10, Rangers top Rays 1-0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish struck out 10 over seven innings for the Texas Rangers to win a 1-0 pitchers' duel against James Shields and the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

Ian Kinsler homered to give Texas enough against the suddenly sliding Rays, who have lost four in a row, had runners on base in each of the first five innings against Darvish (13-9) and still couldn't score. It was their fourth 1-0 loss this season - all in their last 22 games this month.

Shields (12-8) allowed only three hits over his seven innings, including Kinsler's homer leading off the fourth. The Rays right-hander struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter.

Darvish, who allowed six hits, has a majors-best eight 10-strikeout games. The only Rangers pitcher with more in a season was Nolan Ryan, the hard-throwing Hall of Famer who is now the team's president and watched from the first row. Ryan had 18 such games in 1989.

Texas skipped Darvish's scheduled start last Thursday because of tightness in his right quadriceps. But the standout from Japan threw a pair of bullpens since then and showed no ill effects facing the Rays for the first time and throwing 110 pitches.

Joe Nathan struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to convert his 25th consecutive save opportunity, matching the Rangers team record while wrapping up the team's 10th shutout this season. Nathan has retired the last 14 batters he has faced.

Mike Adams took over for Darvish to start the eighth. With a runner at second, first baseman Mitch Moreland went to his knees while snagging Ben Zobrist's hopper near the line, spun around to his feet and then sprinted to first for the inning-ending out.

Shields, who was 4-0 his previous five starts, faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings. He walked David Murphy leading off the third, but promptly picked him off base.

Kinsler pulled a full-count pitch into the left-field seats to start the fourth, his 16th homer of the season. No other runner got past second base against Shields.

Sam Fuld, who wasn't even in the Rays' starting lineup, had three of their four hits. He took over in right field in the second inning for Matt Joyce, who left the game with a left forearm strain.

Twice in the first five innings, the Rays had their first two hitters on base before struggling slugger Carlos Pena struck out.

After Ryan Roberts' one-out infield single in the fourth loaded the bases, Jose Lobaton grounded to Moreland, who started a double play that was completed with Darvish taking the relay throw at first from shortstop Elvis Andrus.

Tampa Bay has been held scoreless eight times this season. That includes five shutout losses in August, when the Rays are 16-9 overall.

Notes: It was the 12th 1-0 game at Rangers Ballpark, which opened in 1994. There have been three this season, all Texas victories. ... John Wetteland converted 25 consecutive save chances for the Rangers form July 1997-May 1998. ... Nathan's career best is 27 in a row for Minnesota in 2004, setting a Twins record. ... Rangers LH Matt Harrison goes for his 16th victory in the series finale. He pitches against Alex Cobb (8-8), who is coming off a four-hit shutout victory against Oakland last Thursday. ... Darvish had been tied for the most 10-strikeout games for Rangers rookies, matching the seven by Jim Bibby in 1973.

US 'withheld' email evidence in WikiLeaks case

Lawyers for the US soldier charged with passing a trove of classified documents to WikiLeaks accused the military of withholding hundreds of emails over fears of a publicity nightmare.

The defense team for Private Bradley Manning, who could be jailed for life for "aiding the enemy" over the massive security breach, alleged that more than 1,300 messages were ignored by prosecutors for at least six months.

The emails relate to the conditions the 24-year-old trooper was held in during military detention at Quantico, Virginia, where he was sent after a spell in a US Army jail in Kuwait following his arrest while on duty in Iraq in 2010.

Manning's civilian lawyer David Coombs told a pre-trial hearing that 84 emails were released to the defense team on July 25 last year, but he later discovered that 1,290 other such messages had not been passed on to him.

The government "chose to let these emails collect dust somewhere," Coombs said on the first day of the three-day hearing at a military base in Fort Meade, Maryland, 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the US capital.

Military prosecutors then suddenly announced that 600 other messages had been handed to Manning's legal team on Monday, ahead of the hearing, but Coombs persisted with his attack.

"It is the defense position that the government has been playing word games," the lawyer said, implying that the emails were held back because the government had adopted a deliberately narrow definition of their relevance to the case.

The soldier's lawyers argue that he was mistreated at Quantico, and even alleged Tuesday that the former intelligence analyst had been ordered by guards to stand at attention while completely naked.

Coombs then took aim at top Marine officers responsible for running the jail, who he said had put their concerns about bad publicity ahead of their duty to provide fair treatment to detainees.

The emails go as high up the chain as General George Flynn, the then commanding general of the US Marine Corps, who had insisted that Manning be placed on suicide watch, according to Coombs.

Top officers at Quantico regularly sent emails to Flynn informing him of Manning's detention conditions, which the defense says were unnecessarily harsh, and told the Marine commander who the jailed WikiLeaks suspect's visitors were.

The military "kept Manning in maximum POI (prevention of injury)" custody "because they didn't want any negative publicity," Coombs said, reading out an official list that placed media risks at the top of eight noted concerns at Quantico.

After his detention at the Marine Corps Brig from July 2010 to April 2011, Manning was transferred to a prison at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where he was placed under less restrictive conditions.

If the court finds he was abused, the case could potentially be thrown out, or any eventual sentence reduced.

However, military counsel at Fort Meade denied that the emails had been held back and said they amounted to nothing more than "argument and conjecture" among the various military commanders involved.

"They were concerned about public affairs (media handling) but they were also concerned about Private First Class Manning," said Major Ashden Fein, the lead counsel for the government.

Colonel Denise Lind, the case judge, however said the months-long delay over disclosure of the emails remained unexplained.

"I still wonder why you waited until July," Lind asked Fein, before ruling that she would examine the estimated 700 emails from the original bundle that remain in government hands, before deciding if they too should be handed over.

The publishing by WikiLeaks of official documents, including military logs concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, triggered a diplomatic firestorm that hugely embarrassed American officials and rankled the nation's allies.

Manning, who is attending this week's hearing, has not yet entered a plea in the case and his trial now looks set to start in February -- five months later than originally thought.

4 Tips On How To Set Goals In College

If your purpose for going to college is to really study, then you have to be prepared to dodge the many and frequent distractions that will be aimed at you. Making a priority list of the most important things that you need to accomplish will help you focus your attention on the matters that are more important for you. Though you shouldn't completely avoid the things that are not included in this list, you must make a conscious effort not to get too caught up in them.

1. Decide on a deadline for your short-term goals.

Deadlines help you realize your goals faster, and breaking down your goals into long-term and short-term goals helps make them more manageable. So that you don't get stuck trying to reach your short-term goals, always set deadlines for them. You can use a goal setting program such as the Covey community, 100 day challenge, and other programs to help you achieve each of your short-term goals quickly. Successfully accomplishing your short-term goals mean that you are taking right steps to reach your long-term or end goals.

2. Create a schedule for yourself.

While you can absolutely live through your college life without a plan, having one helps you to avoid unnecessary setbacks that could have been avoided had you been a bit more organized. By blocking out your schedule for when you need to study and when you allow yourself to freely enjoy the perks of college life, you will be able to enjoy both worlds without the risk of sacrificing either. You can still enjoy vacations and spring breaks, but that doesn't mean that your grades need to suffer.

3. Socialize with the people who will help you achieve your goals.

If you want to get your degree quickly, then you should spend more time with your professors or study groups instead of lounging around with your friends. When you surround yourself with the right people who are relevant to your set goals, then you can expect more opportunities to come your way.

4. Set goals for right after you leave college.

Your goals should not only revolve around your college life. As you near graduation, you must already set goals that will help you become a more successful person. As always, using a goal setting program such as the Covey community, 100 day challenge, and other programs right after graduation will allow you to achieve the goals you've set, which could either be to get a good paying job or to start your own company right away.

Egypt reopens Rafah crossing with Gaza: sources

ISMAILIA, EGYPT/GAZA (Reuters) - Egypt reopened the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Saturday, a lifeline for Gazans which had been closed for much of the month since an August 5 attack on Egyptian guards, Palestinian and Egyptian security sources said.

The move signals an advance in relations between Egypt's new government lead by President Mohammed Mursi and Gaza's Islamist rulers Hamas, which had deteriorated since the attack in which gunmen killed 16 Egyptian soldiers on the Israeli border.

"The Egyptian side has informed us that the Rafah crossing would open all days of the week, without more details," said Ehab Al-Ghsain, spokesman for the interior ministry in Gaza.

The opening of the crossing was confirmed by an Egyptian security source.

Shortly after the attack, Egypt closed the Rafah crossing and moved to seal myriad smuggling tunnels with Gaza on suspicion they might have been used by militants who shot dead the soldiers before storming an Israeli border crossing near Gaza. The attackers were killed by Israeli fire.

The Rafah crossing normally sees some 800 people a day leave for Egypt and beyond, and is the only window on the world for the vast majority of Gazans.

Egypt later said it would open the crossing temporarily, but just for three days, mainly to permit travel for humanitarian purposes such as Palestinians seeking medical care abroad.

Hamas has ruled out suggestions that Palestinian gunmen took part in the Sinai killings and has criticised Cairo for imposing "collective punishment" on the impoverished Mediterranean coastal enclave by sealing the border.

Hamas hoped the election of the Muslim Brotherhood's Mursi would usher in an era of strong ties between Gaza and Cairo, but that has yet to materialise because of strategic considerations involving Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel and related military aid from the United States.

Product Creation Advice ? My Top 3 Ways to Effectively Use Twitter ...

?

By Maritza Parra

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that had been growing at lightning speed with about 5.5 million users at the time of this article. I had no idea what to do once I signed up for my free twitter account. Now I?ve learned what to do and I?m filling up my Teleseminars and my how-to-make-information-products classes with people who came directly from twitter.

Twitter Tip 1: Follow More than just your friends and family.

At first, I was only following one person and couldn?t figure out why in the world anyone would care about random messages about what I was doing and I was sick of hearing all about what he was doing 24/7. I almost (gasp) stopped using twitter altogether because I did not understand it.

Now I follow everyone except those people who look like they might be spammers. By having a lot of followers, every time you send out a message or an invitation to a teleseminar or a new product, those people who are interested in your subject will sign up. More sign ups to your teleseminars means you are building your list community and more customers who can sign up for your products and classes.

Twitter Tip 2: Go to Your Twitter People (Tweeple) when You Need a Boost.

Sometimes you might have a bad day. It?s hard to create products or do much else effectively when you are feeling negative. We all have days like this. I?ve noticed that most people on twitter are extremely positive and caring. If I ever feel discouraged, all I have to do is go to twitter and read some of the posts or interact with my tweeple and I can continue my day with an infusion of inspiration.

Twitter Tip 3: Survey Your Tweeple to See What Kind of Products They Would Buy.

One day I wanted to do a little market research and I decided I would send a survey to my regular list community and the same survey to my twitter followers. I was amazed at the higher responsiveness from my twitter followers compared to my regular list community.

I believe it?s because on twitter people are actively engaged and everyone is flooded with email and many times email is simply ignored. I know I don?t read most of my email or I would never get anything done. I got a huge response from my twitter and they helped me decided which product to create next. I filled up that class with a lot of people from twitter!

And now I would like to invite you to claim your Free Instant Access to my ?Easy Product Creation Secrets? Video when you visit http://www.ProductCreationBonus.com. From Maritza Parra ? The Product Creation Queen and Easy Online Marketing Training

Google Unleashes Octane for Browser Speed Measurements

Google Chrome Octane JavaScript

Google on Tuesday released a new JavaScript benchmark suite, dubbed Octane, intended to help boost browser speed measurements.

In Dec. 2010, Google overhauled V8, Chrome's JavaScript engine, so that it ran complex JavaScript programs up to twice as fast as before. Google said today that Octane extends V8 with five new benchmarks created from full, well-known Web apps and libraries.

"A high score in the new benchmarks directly translates to better and smoother performance in similar web applications," Google said in a blog post.

Google also said Octane includes a more easily understood interface that adapts to the size of the device you're using.

The news tests include Box2DWeb, Mandreel, Pdf.js, GB Emulator, and CodeLoad.

  • Box2DWeb runs a JavaScript port of a popular 2D physics engine.
  • Mandreel translates the original C++ source code for the 3D Bullet Engine to JavaScript by Onan Games' Mandreel compiler, which Google said is used in many Web-based games.
  • Pdf.js is based on Mozilla's PDF reader and measures how fast the browser decodes a sample PDF document.
  • GB Emulator is derived from an open source emulator of a famous game console running a 3D demo, Google said.
  • CodeLoad is derived from open source libraries like Closure, and jQuery.

Octane is now available on googlecode.com.

Rockies Sweep Mets In Big Apple

NEW YORK (AP) ? Collin McHugh pitched two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings for the Mets in his major league debut, but the Colorado Rockies completed their second straight four-game sweep of New York with a 1-0 victory Thursday as Jordany Valdespin misplayed Tyler Colvin?s leadoff drive in the eighth into a game-changing triple.

Colorado tied a season high with its fifth straight win and completed its second four-game sweep in two years at Citi Field.

McHugh, a 25-year-old right-hander, pitched masterfully with nine strikeouts and one walk. But after he left, the Rockies broke through quickly off Bobby Parnell (2-3).

Colvin hit his second pitch to straightaway center, where the rookie Valdespin took two steps in, then realized he had misjudged the drive. He backpedaled a half-dozen steps and tried for a backhand grab, but the ball sailed over his glove.

Chris Nelson fouled off a pair of 0-2 pitches, then singled to center past the drawn-in infield.

Rex Brothers (8-2) pitched two innings for the win, and Will Harris allowed a two-out double to Ruben Tejada in the eighth before striking out Josh Thole on three pitches.

Matt Belisle, Colorado?s fifth pitcher, got his first save since June 22, 2010, against Boston following some ninth-inning drama.

Pinch-hitter Justin Turner singled leading off and was sacrificed to second by Valdespin. Daniel Murphy flied to center and David Wright flied to right.

The punchless Mets went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and were held to two runs or fewer for the sixth straight game, the first time that?s happened since a streak of seven in a row from Sept. 17-21, 1982, according to STATS LLC. The Mets dropped to 11-28 since the All-Star break, which includes a 2-14 mark at Citi Field, and are 11 games under .500 for the first time since they finished 70-92 in 2009.

Taking the rotation slot of injured ace Johan Santana, McHugh threw 63 of 100 pitches for strikes. After Charlie Blackmon?s opposite-field double to left leading off the game, McHugh retired 20 of 22 batters around D.J. LeMahieu?s double starting the third and Carlos Gonzalez?s two-out walk in the fourth.

Last weekend, McHugh pitched seven scoreless innings for Triple-A Buffalo against Pawtucket at Boston?s Fenway Park. McHugh describes himself on his Twitter account as a ?freelance meteorologist & professional baseball player.?

McHugh became the sixth Mets starter to pitch shutout ball in his debut, according to STATS LLC, joining Dick Rusteck (1966), Tim Leary (1981), Masato Yoshii (1998), Tyler Yates (2004) and Matt Harvey (July 26 at Arizona). Only Rusteck pitched longer, throwing a four-hitter against Cincinnati.

Blackmon, like McHugh a product from an Atlanta-area high school, was sacrificed to third following his double. McHugh stranded him there, throwing a called third strike past Jordan Pacheco and fanning Gonzalez.

Colorado switched in June to a four-man rotation, instituting a limit of 75 pitches per start. Even though the Rockies are back to five starters for now, Tyler Chatwood was pulled after 65 pitches. He allowed three hits in three scoreless innings, then was replaced by Adam Ottavino.

Ottavino, a 2003 graduate of Brooklyn?s Berkeley Carroll School, allowed one hit over two innings.

New York, in the midst of a deep funk, helped the Rockies out of potential trouble. Mike Baxter misjudged Tejada?s popped ball to center with one out in the second and was thrown out at second by Colvin, costing Tejada a single.

NOTES: Gold medal-winning American gymnast Gabby Douglas threw out a ceremonial first pitch. It was a high, arching pitch from the front of the mound that was caught to the first-base side of the plate by pitcher Robert Carson. Having not bounced the ball, Douglas raised both arms in triumph. ? The Mets canceled the option of C Rob Johnson to Buffalo and put him on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 15, with a ligament tear in his left thumb. ? Rockies CF Dexter Fowler was on crutches, his ankle wrapped, after spraining it Wednesday night. Manager Jim Tracy said he wasn?t available but the medical staff told him Fowler was day to day. ? Mets 1B Ike Davis dropped Wright?s bounced throw from third on Wilin Rosario?s grounder leading off the second, but Davis picked up the ball with his bare hand in time for the out. ? The Mets offered a kids-go-free if accompanied by adults promotion; the game drew 22,544, the 12th-lowest crowd ever at 4-year-old Citi Field. ? The Rockies also won five in a row from May 28 to June 1.

Control Pests with IPM Method

Whether it is a home or commercial space, pests are certainly a nuisance to handle. It is essential to eradicate these threats as quickly as possible to ensure that the situation does not become worse. IPM or Integrated Pest Management is an effective option to get rid of pests safely and effectively.

This year's mild winter and early spring have prompted many insect populations to appear around homes and offices sooner than usual and in larger numbers. Because of this, people have had to seek the help of pest control companies to resolve their pest problems quickly and adequatly. IPM or Integrated Pest Management is one of the most popular and effective techniques used to eradicate pests and make homes and buildings pest free.

IPM has emerged as a strong and widely used approach to control pests. IPM can effectively eradicate any pest problem while staying environmentally conscious. Using the least hazardous techniques of pest management, many people opt for IPM rather than the traditional methods of pest removal.

Integrated Pest Management's approach revolves around a combination of varied common-sense practices. It is often seen that pests build up a resistance to products and sprays that are used to kill them. Although such products can show desired results early on, more often than not pests begin to reappear and the same products become ineffective in controlling the situation because the pests have grown accustomed to them.

IPM uses an advanced approach that is ideal over standard pest removal practices. The method focuses on the use of the latest information about life cycles of various pests. In addition to this, the approach even utilizes the information regarding their interaction with the environment.

The comprehensive information about pests is constantly being updated and is used alongside the most cutting-edge pest control methods available. The best part of using IPM method is that you are free to apply our unique technique any place. Whether it is home, garden, farm or workplace, the method is effective everywhere.

IPM uses a carefully formatted step-by-step process that has been formulated to get rid of pests for good. The first step for pest management includes pest identification in which the IPM experts monitor where pests are coming from and where they are residing. Further visual inspection, insect traps and various other measurement methods are put in place to find pests and remove them.

The program for pest management controls pests by making use of different methods such as biological, mechanical or pesticide procedures. In fact, many times two or more methods are coupled together to get the desired results. The methods used by IPM are ecofriendly and less hazardous to our earth compared to conventional pest removal procedures.

Wherever you reside in America, IPM's approach is the best solution to get rid of any unwanted pests. If possible, you should hire a professional pest control company that is capable of using the different IPM techniques to eradicate pests. When looking for pest control in Florida, you should consider close proximity and a reliable track record before hiring any pest control services.

Not too young to write a memoir | Lismore Books | Book Reviews ...

FOR Jessica Watson, Young Australian of the Year 2011, writing a book about her sailing experiences was a way to show ?I was really ordinary?.

Jessica Watson speaking at Byron Bay Writers? Festival.

Patrick Gorbunovs

FOR Jessica Watson, Young Australian of the Year 2011, writing a book about her sailing experiences was a way to show "I was really ordinary".

Speaking at the Byron Bay Writers' Festival on Saturday, the girl who became the youngest person to sail solo, unassisted and non-stop around the world, said: "When I first started sailing I was scared of the water."

But she added that it wasn't just "a bit of luck" that she circumnavigated the globe.

"There were years and years of preparation and hard work," said the young author of True Spirit, The Aussie Girl Who Took on the World.

On May 15, 2010 after 210 days at sea and 24,285 nautical miles (about 40,000km), a then-16 years old Jessica Watson sailed her yacht Ella's Pink Lady back into Sydney Harbour.

A book deal had already been done long before that, she revealed.

"The book started out for practical reasons," said Jessica.

She needed money for her adventure and her advance from the publishing company made them a sponsor.

"I felt so weird about writing a memoir at 15 but it made the voyage possible," she said.

"I also needed to explain to people in my own words about what really happened (on my adventure) and the experience and knowledge that I already had.

"I wanted to get the story out of why my parents weren't crazy for letting me go."

Jessica said her book also made a statement that young girls can do anything.

A skilled and unaffected public speaker, the young Aussie appeared on stage with author and playwright Ned Manning and author Paul Carter for a session entitled True Lies: Writing Memoir.

Her other claim to fame, a stint on Channel Seven's Dancing with the Stars, rated a brief mention by the session host.
