Is It Best to Invest in a Wall Bike Rack?

Whether for fun, fitness or convenience so many more of us are taking up the call to ?get on our bikes?. Of course this raises the issue of finding storage room within our home, garage or workplace for these extra possessions and their associated accessories. Often a new bike represents a significant investment and needs to be treated well so it gives many years of good service. Therefore, when the ride is over, it?s important to find somewhere safe to store your bicycle until the next time you use it. Simply leaving this awkward shaped piece of machinery leaning up against a wall with its handlebars jutting out is not only messy but an injury risk to passers-by. What?s more, bicycles should be stored off the floor when not in use as this minimizes wear and tear on tires and seals, particularly in climates where there are drastic changes in temperatures between seasons.

There are many different types of bike storage ideas on the market; knowing which one to choose requires some consideration, such as:

  • the room in which you intend to store your bike, i.e. house/apartment/garage/office
  • whether your bike needs to be secured ? especially if left in a communal or easily accessible area
  • the type of wall/floor space you have available
  • the number of bikes you want to store
  • the style and weight of your bike/s
  • if you need an integrated shelf or additional hooks to store accessories like helmet, shoes, etc.
  • if you want the storage device to double as a work station for maintenance and repairs
  • whether you want the unit to be interchangeable with your car cycle rack

If you have high ceilings and restricted floor space, in particular a small garage where you park your car, a ceiling mounted hook or lift might be your only option.

However, for people who ride their bikes often and want ready access, the simplest and most convenient style of bike storage rack is one that fixes to the wall. With these racks you have the choice of storing your bike in the horizontal position, or in the vertical position at either right-angles or parallel to the wall. Many of these purpose-built wall bike racks are made from durable scratch resistant material and come fully assembled with mounting hardware. Generally, they are quick and easy to install, and all you need are basic handy skills plus a stud finder and a drill.
